Can CLA help you lose weight?
If a few extra pounds have made you go MIA, maybe it’s time you tried CLA? With so many new methods and supplements out there it can be hard to keep up. So you may, or may not of, heard of CLA, the weight loss supplement that has been said to help you lose weight. CLA is the only supplement scientifically proven to specifically target fat around the waist.
So, what exactly is CLA and is it the weight loss wonder we’ve all been searching for?
CLA stands for, conjugated linoleic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in things like lamb, beef, and dairy products. Much like most weight loss products currently on the market, the supplement form is made into either a pill or syrup, to add to foods.

Scientific research behind CLA
A series of small studies on the supplement have been performed with some what mixed results. A test group in Scandinavia was conducted with almost 200 people, who were split into three groups and given either a CLA pill, CLA syrup, or a placebo pill to trial. Both groups who consumed the CLA supplement presented weight loss by the end of the year, while those taking the placebo pill did not (unfortunately mind over matter didn’t work in this case) The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, produced results for eighteen different studies. Seven of these eighteen studies, produced weight loss results. The journal currently lists CLA as a proven weight loss supplement.
CLA has also been tested on animals, showing positive weight loss results. The findings when tested on animals, have been consistent across the board with weight loss between nine and sixty percent. While humans have been tested with up to a nine percent total body weight loss. However, most of the studies performed on humans, did not show any further progress after two years.

Will CLA work for me?
Studies found that those who fell between the body mass index of 25 and 30 had the most responsive results with weight loss when taking CLA. The average amount of weight loss found during the studies was four pounds in a year. Not amazing, but still a significant change considering the participants weren’t asked to change any of their eating or exercise habits. Surprisingly the most weight loss occurred in the abdominal area, the prime target for most dieters, which can be hard to shift. As a CLA is a naturally occurring substance, it is generally a safe supplement to add to your diet. However, studies have shown small increases in cholesterol leading to detrimental heart health properties. According to the lead scientist of the Scandinavian study, most of these increases were low and in a controlled manner.
CLA kinda just stops little fat cells from getting really big. And no one wants big fat cells
What CLA supplement should I look out for?
If you’re curious about trying CLA for weight loss, choose a supplement with at least 80% CLA content. For best results, it’s generally suggested to take at least 3.4 grams of the supplement a day. You can find CLA online as well as in many health food and vitamin stores. For an added boost incorporate CLA foods into your diet, that are packed full of the substance, like as grass fed beef or for a meat free option, eggs or safflower oil. As with most weight loss supplements, you should discuss it with your doctor before you begin taking it and be sure to follow the directions on the label.
