How Glucomannan Can Help with Weight Loss
While the name Glucomannan, may not ring any bells, it has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine and can be found in many products available today. Glucomannan was initially used to treat asthma, burns, skin issues and used as an insect repellent. It is a sugar created from the root of the konjac plant and is used as a emulsifier and thickener in many pills and powders. Glucomannan is FDA approved and its use even extends past the food and drink industry, into makeup. What’s interesting now, is how it acts as a weight loss supplement.
Lose fat and stay lean, while improving satiety and appetite. What more could you ask for?
Uses for Glucomannan
There are multiple uses and benefits for using Glucomannan. Being a soluble fiber, it is used to help with constipation and has also been shown to also help Diabetes sufferers when taking it. Glucomannan has been used to help reduce cholesterol, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure. While there aren’t enough studies yet to confirm, there have been cases where it has even helped people suffering from an overactive thyroid.
Why does it work so well as a weight loss supplement? Simple. It absorbs waters and forms a gel (hence the warnings below) that alters your hunger signals, which helps you feel fuller for longer. So, by tricking the body into feeling full for a long period of time, we naturally eat less. Bye, bye snacking!
How should Glucomannan be taken?
Whether it’s pill form or powder, it is NOT to be taken dry, as it could cause you to choke. If you opt for the powder form, try adding it into your favourite food or blending it into your shake. You can also try eating products made from glucomannan such as shirataki noodles, which you can find at your local Korean and Japanese food stores. But start small. You can buy the powder (known as Konjac flour) for around $15 for 4oz (yes, it’s not cheap).
Generally prized for its gelatinous texture rather than its taste. Glucomannan will take on the taste of whatever it’s cooked or marinated in.
Potential Side Effects
The powder and capsule form are considered the best way to ingest the supplement. Pills have been said to be unsafe, due to its swelling properties, which can lead to choking in adults and especially children. It’s also important to note that because Glucomannan absorbs anything in the stomach and intestines, you’ll want to take it at least an hour after taking other medications, as it can affect the effectiveness of them.

Is Glucomannan for me?
Glucomannan has been deemed safe and is easy to use. So, if your looking for something to help aid those cravings, this could be the supplement for you. If your still undecided, why not start with the noodles? ( because, who can say no to noodles, right?) Starting small is always best, that way you can see how you feel and from there move onto incorporating into a shake. Just make sure you read the label carefully and follow the directions of use.
